Furthermore, the country in which you get married may require you to reside there for a certain length of time. For example, France requires people to reside in the country for 40 days prior to a religious ceremony. You want to ensure that all applicable laws and requirements for a legal ceremony are adhered to in that country. It will make the recording of your marriage in the UK that much easier.

Regardless, there are certain countries where the marriage can be recorded with the General Register Office and a possible fee may be required. It is advisable to check with the General Register Office to obtain which countries qualify. Additionally, recording the marriage could result in a marriage certificate being issues should an occasion arise that one be required.
