The dress has been purchased and the church is reserved. Now you need to figure out what kind of invitations you want to spread the word of your special day, containing the pertinent information about the day, such as who is getting married, when, and where the event will occur.

The style of your invitations should reflect your personality and type of wedding you are planning, such as a formal or contemporary ceremony.  The message is conveyed by the type of paper and font you choose.

If you are choosing a professional to make your wedding invitation, it is good to have an idea of what kind of invitation you would like to have.  There are so many different choices that having an idea prior to meeting with a professional will make your decision less stressful.

For instance, if you are having a more traditional wedding then a traditional wedding invitation is the most appropriate.  The style is usually simple and elegant with black ink on a white or cream-colored paper. 

There are more exciting options for a contemporary wedding invitation.  This allows the couple to personalize their invitations to their personalities, such as a theme or colour scheme like Celtic, gold, etc. 

There are many different options for the wording of your wedding invitation.  This is usually based on the type of ceremony and style of invitation.  For instance, if you are having a formal ceremony, there are certain etiquette rules for the wording of your invitation.  If you have having a contemporary ceremony, then the wording can be a bit more flexible to reflect more of the personality of the couple. The professional printer will have samples for you to view, or you research for the information on the internet.

The best time to order your invitations is after you have determined the date, time and place of the ceremony and reception.  The common suggestion by wedding planners is at least three to six months prior to the ceremony as the wedding invites must be to the invited guests between six and eight weeks before the ceremony.  This also allows you at least a month to assemble the invitation, reply cards for RSVP, including time to address the envelopes.

When determining the number of invitations to order, one invitation should be sent to a family unless they have children 18 years of age and older, then one should be sent directly to them.  It is also a good idea to add a few extras for any last minute guests and a couple for keepsakes.  Re-ordering your invitations is not only expensive, but you may not receive the order in time.

Weddings are a happy occasion that should be celebrated with family and friends.  The invitation will reflect the type of ceremony and personality of the couple.  It is best not to settle for something that you really are not happy with, as the invitation will set the tone for the ceremony.
